ASCENDANT Hosts Food Drive at Free Benefit Concert

Chicago, IL August 6, 2004 -- ASCENDANT Hosts Food Drive at Free Benefit Concert to Benefit Greater Chicago Food Depository. On Tuesday, August 10 at 7:00 p.m., soul-jazz trio ASCENDANT is hosting a canned-food drive concert at Jesse Owens Park (2032 East 88th Street, Chicago) in conjunction with their new project, "What Can I Do Now?" The Chicago-based band will donate all food items to the Greater Chicago Food Depository in support of its mission to provide food for hungry people while striving to end hunger in our community.

ASCENDANT is encouraging everyone to bring a canned food item to the concert.

The concert is FREE to the public.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository is a charter member of America's Second Harvest, an organization that solicits food from national manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers then makes it available to over 200 member food banks and food rescue organizations throughout the country. Annually, 309,655 different people rely on emergency feeding programs served by the Food Depository.

What Can I Do Now? Was created by band member Aleata Holloway, initially as a local-awareness tool to draw attention to the issues of homelessness and hunger in Chicago. When ASCENDANT was slated as a participant in the Chicago Park District's "Concerts in the Park" series, Holloway saw the event as an opportunity to draw attention to the concern while providing an entertaining and cost-effective medium for the public to take action.

ASCENDANT is headed by three artists, Kael Mboya (founder, keyboards, vocals), Aleata Holloway (bass, vocals), and Michael Lockett (percussions, vocals). Their collective vision is to share their gifts and passion for music with the world. Individually and collectively they enjoy numerous regional, national and international performing credits. They have recently received local, national and international media exposure, including features on NBC5 news, WGN Morning News, NBA Entertainment's NBA "Inside Stuff", and various overseas reviews. Their music can be heard on WHPK 88.5FM.
